The Civil War gallery features the role of Grant, Galena and Jo Daviess County citizens in that great conflict.

Incredibly, nine of Galena's citizens became Union Generals for service rendered during the Civil War, including the most famous of all--Ulysses S. Grant.

We feature a large exhibit area devoted to original weaponry, prints, letters and photographs. Keeping watch over our gallery is the original "Peace in Union" oil painting (9' x 12') depicting Lee's surrender to Grant at Appomatox in 1865. (Quality prints of "Peace in Union" are available in our Gift Shop.)

"Peace in Union" by Thomas Nast.

U.S. Grant, his wife and 4 children came to Galena in 1860 to join his two brothers at their leather goods store.
