Special Items in the Galena History Museum
 

PAINTINGS: "Julia Dent Grant" by famous presidential artist William Cogswell.  Rare oil portrait of Mrs. U.S. Grant; at one time loaned to the Smithsonian.

"Hezekiah H. Gear" by John Mix Stanley. Portraits by Stanley are extremely rare, prized today for their quality and character.  This is one of his earliest (1837) of a prominent Galena citizen.

"Daniel Wann" by John  Mix Stanley.  Another early portrait of a prominent Galena Citizen.

FLAG: Commodore Perry's Battle Flag.  One of America's most famous naval battles took place during the War of 1812 when Perry captured the British fleet in a decisive battle on Lake Erie.  Flag given to the valiant sailor who saved it from destruction; this man later moved to Galena and struck it rich in the lead mines.

POTTERY: Large collection of "Galena Pottery," name given to a distinctive glazed earthenware pottery made in and around Galena 1848-1899.  Includes two very rare dogs, one used as a doorstop, the other to hold a ball of string.

LINCOLN SOFA: 1850s sofa from Springfield, Illinois was owned by friends of the Lincolns.  They reported that it was a favorite of Abraham's whenever he and his wife visited.

GRANT'S CIGAR BUTT: Upon learning that he had lost the 1880 nomination for president, Grant flung his cigar into the gutter and walked on.  A small boy retrieved it for the storeowner across the street.

CIVIL WAR RECORDS: Original papers, photographs, and correspondence from several of Galena's nine Civil War Generals, including U.S. Grant.

GUNS: A large collection dating from the 1830s to the 1940s, including four  made by Galena gunsmith, and later Civil War General, Jasper Maltby.  He was the inventor of one of the first telescopic sites.

1872 EVENING CAPE: This evening cape was worn by Mrs. Thomas Nast to Ulysses S. Grant's second presidential inauguration.

1700s WEDDING PETTICOAT: This extremely rare petticoat is said to contain every embroidery stitch in use at the time.

STELLA DURANT BUENING DOLL & TOY COLLECTION: A wonderful and varied collection of early dolls and toys, including early graphic board games and teddy bears.  These items range in age from the 1890s to the 1930s.

CIVIL WAR PRINTS: Collection includes a complete set of 40 original Forbes prints, plus 7 Kurz & Allison prints depicting scenes from the Civil War.

JULIA GRANT QUILT: A quilt said to contain pieces of the dresses that Julia Grant wore while in the White House.  The quilt was made by a group of Galena ladies after the Grants left the White House.

GRANT COVERLET: Colorful woven coverlet from the 1860s with images of General Grant.

COSTUME COLLECTION: Extensive collection of clothing and fashion accessories dating from 1830 to 1950.  Includes and exception 1840s wedding dress, fine military uniforms, early beaded purses, and parasols.

ROCKINGHAM WASHBOARD: Rare washboard made of Rockingham pottery.

GRANT CHINA: Large set of Haviland china owned by President and Mrs. Grant and given by them as a wedding gift to friends.

ROUGH RIDER HAT: Grey felt had apparently worn by a member of Teddy Roosevelt's Rough Riders during the Spanish-American War.
