Winter Proram Series
Every winter, the Galena-Jo Daviess County Historical Society hosts four lectures about Galena-area and Civil War History. All programs (with the exception of the April program) take place at 7pm at the Galena Middle School Commons (1230 Franklin St., Galena)-unless otherwise noted. The programs are free and open to the public. Refreshments are available.
January 21-Area resident Cory Ritterbusch will talk about his book H.S. Pepoon: Pioneer Conservationist of Northwest Illinois. Herman Pepoon, a Warren native, was a nationally recognized botanist, teacher, doctor and author. He is responsible for the creation of Apple River Canyon State Park. Ritterbusch will talk about his life, his 11 essays about the flora and terrain in Jo Daviess County from 100 years ago and his contributions to the history of Jo Daviess County and the Midwest. Join us on H.S. Pepoon's 152nd Birthday.
Feburary 18-Natural Resources Coordinator Chris Kirkpatrick will present on edible wild plants, current, historic, and prehistoric, including uses of plants by Native Americans in the area. Kirkpatrick will also note wild plants that can be harvested for food today.
March 24-Local historian Steve Repp will present "A Photo Journey Into the Past".
April 14-Archaeologist Phil Millhouse will discuss Native American Mining in the Driftless Area at the DeSoto House Hotel Ballroom, 230 S. Main St. at 7pm.
